I have been serving women and families in the childbearing year since 1972.
I began working with breastfeeding mothers and babies shortly after my first baby was born being asked to help two mothers begin nursing their older babies. I became a La Leche League leader in 1973 and lead meetings for over 10 years. I was hopeful that women would have better births after attending the La Leche League meeting about birth choices. Feeling that wasn't providing enough information to empower enough mothers, I began teaching childbirth classes through Informed Birth in 1978 while living in Fairbanks, Alaska.
I felt even with this additional information women were finding their choices limited by their hospital experiences. I had my third baby at home in 1977 and knew I wanted to become a midwife so I began attending homebirths in 1980.
I spent 1 1/2 years in El Paso, TX in 1987 helping to open a new birth center which continues to serve women, and train new midwives almost 30 years later. My mission in life includes both providing exceptional, personalized care for women and their families and also to "grow" as many new, excellent midwifes as possible. Our midwifery team in New Mexico has many years of experience in caring for all of the needs of the pregnant woman, baby and family.
